Central Heating Radiators Have Come A Long Way.
There was a time when using central heating radiators meant shoveling coal and listening to the pipes creak and groan as the cast iron expanded and contracted. But today, modern systems are efficient, simple, and reliable. And, they are easy to repair. They have come a long way indeed.
Even before the Roman baths, radiators provided warmth to chilly humans seeking relief from the elements. Simple systems using clay pipes to transport naturally heated water from hot springs have evolved over the centuries. Now they are elegant systems that can use anything from heat pumps to bio-fuels.
Modern day radiators can be out of sight beneath the floor, hidden in walls or resemble 100 year old cast iron radiators from a century ago. What they are made of however might well be a space age plastic or composite fiber. The pipes may be flexible and joined by plastic compression fittings and the water or high-tech heat carrying fluid get its warmth from a heat pump or a bio-fuel. The limitations of coal, oil and natural gas have been surpassed by the steady progress of science.
The modern central heating radiator system has improved its efficiency by taking advantage of innovation in many areas. Heat loss has been decreased using new methods of insulation. Wasted energy has been minimized by computerized zoning schemes. And through all of this the comfort of radiated heat remains at the top of list of competitors.

And because of these new materials, the noise factor has declined to almost nothing. No fans to rattle no ventilators to whine. There are even computer screens to make optimizing heat use a touch of a key or tap of a touch pad.
So, the future looks bright for centrally located radiators. New materials, new ways of controlling the use of energy and where the heat goes, all add up to a system that none of our relatives would recognize. But all of them would appreciate.
